Book of the Week: The Crossroads

The Crossroads by L. Ron Hubbard

Book Synopsis:
Frustrated with a government that pays him to bury surplus produce in order to "fix" the economy while city folk starve, farmer Eben Smith decides to take matters into his own hands. He piles up his wagon with ripe fruits and vegetables and sets out for the first time to barter his goods in the big city.
Being Eben's first city trip and all, the way soon becomes uncertain. But when Eben comes across a strange crossroads, he discovers that he's fallen into a nexus in time. Soon he's bartering a lot more than goods with different cultures in alternative realities . . . accidentally wreaking havoc and chaos in each.

Review:
This week's Book of the Week is The Crossroads. This story, though a sci-fi/fantasy, is such a touching story. Both my husband and I felt bad for the main character, as he is just trying to make it in a crashing economy - just like so many of us when the recession hit a few years ago.

Farmer Eben Smith makes a living with the crops he grows and sells. But when the government tells him he must destroy his crops in order to help the economy, Eben is frustrated and devastated. Knowing he can't just throw out all he has worked for, and needs to survive too, the farmer decides to pack up his crops and hit the road. Eben knows he can sell or trade his crops in the city, and also knows this is his best option for survival.

When on his way to the city, Eben comes to a crossroad. He decides to site and have lunch there, while trying to figure out which way to go. Why? Because each of these four roads are different. As he sits there, he finds people keep coming by and bartering with him for his crops. Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse, as his bartering continues.

Also included with this story are the two fantastic short stories "Borrowed Glory" and "The Devil's Rescue". The first is a romantic story about two beings making a bet on whether or not a human can have it all, and the second is about a stranded sailor that is taken aboard a not-so-normal ship.

All three of these stories not only cause you to think, but really gives you a new look at your own life. So if you are looking for an exciting sci-fi story, then I completely recommend The Crossroads.
